It twas a fun night last night going bar hopping and I toned down the drinking a bit. Woke up at 12 and realized it was already Sunday. The days are going by faster and faster and even though we are not taking anything for granted and are exploring as much as possible, the days need to slow down just a bit. As Max and I were eating PB&J’s (what would we do without out them?) we decided that we wanted to go somewhere, because it is Sunday and that is what we always do. We cant just hang around the apartment and do nothing, must explore as much of this city as possible no matter how cold it is. Daegu has so much to offer, not only nightlife, but historically, you just have to be willing to do it.
So we headed out the door toward Bullo-dong Tumuli (tomb) Park. The only problem was that we didn’t exactly know how to get there. Max knew that we had to take the number 1 bus, but had no idea where to get off. Got on the bus and stayed on it for a good 20-30 minutes and we didn’t know if it was taking us to the right place or not even though Max thought it should have. So we made a decision to get off at some random stop that looked cool and had lots of little markets. The markets had everything you could imagine ranging from meat to vegetables to seafood to spices. You name it and they probably had it and then some. In addition, we saw some interesting fish and other food that could not be identified. I bought 15 or so tangerines for 3 dollars and Max bought some fried Kim bop. After walking around for a half hour or so, we decided to get a cab and tell him where we wanted to go. It seemed like he understood and it was about a 5 minute cab ride until he started speaking Korean and said that we had arrived. Only problem, was that there was no park with tombs to be seen. Max tried to talk to him and I told him we will just walk around because we could not be far. As we get out of the cab we see the number one bus pass us by, pretty funny don’t you think? We start walking for less than a minute and I turn my head to the right and see the tomb park in the distance. We walk for about 5 minutes and arrive at this huge park with 200 plus tombs, more like little hills now that cover the area. It was awesome how these tombs were structured in a way that made them look like gigantic ant hills. Max thought the place was eerie, but I didn’t seem mind much. We walked around the whole park looking at the different mounds discussing why one is bigger than the other and it is Max’s job to find the answer to that. The one thing we do know is that they date back to the fourth or fifth century. Once we completed our walk we headed back to the main road to go back to the apartment.
The next journey of the day begins: We both think that the number one bus should take us back to our place, so we hop on the bus hoping that it will do so. We are on the bus for 30 minutes and we get downtown and figure it will make a loop and drop us off where we started. Twenty minutes later we do not recognize anything and ask a lady on the bus if this goes to suesong (where we live). She said no and at the next stop we get off the bus. Now we are in an area that we have never seen before and do not know how far we are from our apartment. We continue walking trying to find the subway station, but fail so we resort to hailing a cab. Max tells the cabbie where to go and he gives us a look of which he had never heard of such an area. He turned on his GPS and we were on our way. I believe the bus took us a half hour away because that is how long it took to get back to our apartment. We finally see familiar buildings and I am overwhelmed with joy that we are finally back. It was a long day of traveling so we make dinner, eat, and now about to go to bed.
Let the 4 day work week begin!
